Banged Up Abroad

Banged Up Abroad, a National Geographic series

The kidnapping at the heart of The Cloud Garden was retold on screen in Banged Up Abroad — National Geographic's long-running true-story strand (known as Locked Up Abroad in the US) — in an episode called The Orchid Hunters.

First broadcast in 2012, the episode retells how Tom Hart Dyke and Paul Winder were ambushed and held for nine months by FARC guerrillas while crossing the Darien Gap, mixing dramatic reconstruction with first-hand interviews in the same tense, real-time style the series is known for. It runs around 46 minutes and is rated 15 in the UK. Depending on which platform or region you're browsing, it's listed under slightly different numbering — Series 8, Episode 6 on some UK guides, Season 2012, Episode 16 on others — since Banged Up Abroad and its US counterpart Locked Up Abroad have run on different broadcasters over the years.
